Big Beat Big Band achieves the rare feat of merging the old and cherished with the new and exciting. The ensemble preserves the spirit of challenging big band arrangements while weaving in more modern influences from the worlds of funk, jazz, R&B, and more. The resulting music blends big band sounds reminiscent of Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra with other notable influences, like Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Thundercat, and Jill Scott.

Tying it all together are the husband-wife duo of Allison and Caleb Rumley. Allison’s profound and versatile vocals and superb songwriting deliver the perfect complement to Caleb’s command of the robust instrument section and his mastery of the big band format.

Since its genesis in 2014, Big Beat Big Band has been driven by the continuous pursuit of creating music that sounds good and feels good. What else would you expect from a group of jazz geeks? Over the years, new members have joined and old ones have left. Marriages and children happened, and there was a pandemic. Through all of it, there has always been a continuous passion for creating and experimenting with music that feels good and sounds good.

It is this energy and dedication that has been behind the group’s insatiable drive to deliver their music to more listeners through live performances and a steady supply of new recordings. In 2022, Big Beat Big Band headlined The Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ. The band is also a regular at William Paterson University’s Summer Jazz Series, headlining the event in 2023.

These successes have attracted guest artists like Mike LeDonne, Eric Alexander, Peter Bernstein, Robin Eubanks, Duane Eubanks and others to partake in the Big Beat Big Band experience.
